Scheduling a Sewing Class at Make This Yours NC Teaching Studio

Scheduling a sewing class at Make This Yours NC Teaching Studio is simple.  All classes are scheduled based on the availability of the participants.  If you are interested in scheduling a sewing class, contact me to suggest several dates and I will work with you to find a date and time that is convenient for you.  Sewing classes are available for participants ages 10 and up and can be taught on weekday afternoons and Saturdays.

3 different sewing classes are offered. Each class is 4 hours and class size is limited to 1 – 2 persons to allow personalized instruction. The cost of each sewing class is $50 per person. The registration fee covers personalized instruction and the patterns, notions, and fabric used in the class. Sewing machines are available for use in the class. Participants may bring their own sewing machine, but the instruction manual for the machine must be provided in the event that questions arise about the machine’s operation.

Class #1 – Beginning to Sew
Create a 18×18 inch decorative pillow and 18×21 inch tote bag with shoulder straps

Skills taught will include:

  • how to choose fabric appropriate for task
  • pattern placement for cutting
  • basic skills such as creating a bobbin and threading the sewing machine
  • creating standard seams including back stitching to secure seams and reinforce corners

Fabrics for beginner sewing projects are included in the cost of the class. Fabric selections include several colors and design variations appropriate for each class project.

Class #2 – Designing and Sewing Elastic Waist Pants
This class teaches you to sew casual “pull-on” pants with an elastic waist. Bring a pair of your favorite slacks to use in designing a personalized pattern that will be used to make a pair of comfortable, but versatile pants.
Some sewing experience or prior participation in the Beginning to Sew class is highly recommended

Skills taught will include:

  • use of existing pants to make a personalized pattern
  • how to create seam allowances on a pattern
  • correct pattern placement for cutting
  • creating an elastic casing for comfortable waistline fit
  • how to measure and create a machine-sewn hem

Note: Fabric is available for use in this class, but participants may bring their own fabric, if desired.

Class #3 – Making a Skirt
Choose from 3 different designs to make a skirt.

  1. a basic skirt with an elastic waist, designed to be made from a stretch knit fabric
  2. a 6-panel, slightly flared skirt with princess seams and a side zipper
  3. a straight or A-line skirt with a back zipper and waistline darts to create a contour waist
Some sewing experience or prior participation in the Beginning to Sew and/or Elastic Waist Pants class is required

Skills taught will include:

  • how to adapt a multi-size pattern to reflect your personal size
  • how to identify the bias of a fabric
  • how to position pattern pieces according to instructions
  • how to sew in a zipper
  • how to create and sew darts (skirt 3)

Note: Fabric is available for use in this class, but participants may bring their own skirt-appropriate fabric, if desired.

The registration fee for each sewing class is $50.00 per person.  Due to the amount of hands-on participation involved, the class is offered for as few as 1 but no more than 2 participants. Sewing classes are available for participants ages 10 and up and can be taught on weekday afternoons and Saturdays.  To obtain additional information about any sewing class or to inquire about scheduling a class, contact me using the information below.
